How to Define the Target Audience for Your Business

Have you ever wondered what would happen if your marketing strategy never reached the people who might actually be interested in your product or service? The success of your business is at stake, and if you can’t reach them, you will struggle to hit your goals.

That is why being clear about who your target audience is becomes essential if you want to reach the person who needs you but doesn’t yet know you exist, or what you can do for them.

What is your target audience?

To start with, your target audience is the group of people or users who share a set of characteristics and who, above all, are the potential customers of your business.

Why is it important to identify them? For the reason we mentioned above. If you don’t know who your product or service is aimed at, you are literally working blind. Not only will you not know how to reach them, you also won’t know how to talk to them or what they care about.

Steps to get to know your target audience

The process consists of segmenting the current market; in other words, identifying the potential audience, the people most likely to take an interest in your business. How? To make it easier, here is a series of steps to follow. Take note and get started today!

Analyze your product or service

The first thing is to know exactly what the characteristics of the product or service you offer are. How will you figure out who might be interested in your product if you don’t know its benefits or advantages? And, beyond that, how are you going to sell it without knowing it? This is step one. Once you know which needs you are going to meet, you can narrow a general audience down to the segment with the most potential for your business.

  • What benefits does my product offer?
  • What problems does my service solve?
  • Who is it aimed at? Children, men, or women?
  • Why would someone buy my product or hire my services?
  • What makes my business different from others?
  • What advantages does my product or service bring?

These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself in order to pin down the value your business provides. What is its purpose? As you answer each question, you will see that audience more clearly, the people who genuinely need you and who are, logically, the ones you should be speaking to.

Study your audience

If your business is already up and running, you can draw on your current customers and study their specific characteristics. What data should you look for? Basically, any information that can help you attract them and reach them at the most convenient moment. Some of the most useful data points are:

  • Geographic location
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Occupation or profession
  • Interests
  • Hobbies
  • Buying habits
  • Language

How do you get this information? One way is by running a survey, especially if you have a website. Just make sure you use a well-designed questionnaire so you collect only the data you actually need without annoying your users. Let’s be honest: nobody enjoys surveys or answering a long list of questions. So if you add an incentive, you may have more success. How about a discount?

Make the most of social media

Social media can give you more information about your audience or target market. Did your surveys or questionnaires leave a gap somewhere? Then social media will probably fill in the information you are missing.

Today there are plenty of software tools that run a complete analysis of your social media accounts. This lets you learn things about your audience such as the times when they are most active, their preferences, their tastes, and plenty of other useful information.

On the other hand, even if you run a questionnaire and manage to gather everything you need to define your target audience, it never hurts to round out that information with a social media analysis. That way you will achieve better segmentation and your research will be more effective.

Research the competition

Analyzing the competition will help you set a clearer direction for your strategies and define your target audience. But be careful! Don’t copy your competitors. The fact that something worked for others does not mean it will work the same way for you. Besides, as a professional in your field, you can surely stand out on your own merits.

So why study the competition at all? Because by doing so you can discover who is interested in the product or service you sell, how they react to certain strategies, what they are looking for most, and which mistakes the competition is making. Logically, those are mistakes you not only want to avoid repeating but can also improve on.

The idea is to understand how far the competition goes and which errors to steer clear of. Thanks to that, you can define your potential customer much more precisely and know how to reach them in the most effective way.

Test paid ads

Do you already have an idea of who your target audience is? This final step will help you confirm that your definition of the ideal customer for your business is the right one. Now it’s time to put marketing and advertising strategies into practice.

To do this, you can start by running dedicated ads on social media designed to attract the user you have just defined. Based on the results, you will be able to verify whether you have achieved good market segmentation for the success of your business.

Advantages of defining your target audience

The truth is that when you define your target audience, there is nothing but advantages, but here are a few worth highlighting.

A clear direction

In businesses without a clear direction, it is very likely that things will head down the wrong path. Where does a business without a course end up? Honestly, it most likely won’t get very far.

To achieve your goals and turn a business into a good business, you need to know who to speak to, when, and how. And that is only possible with a clearly defined customer. This way you can focus all your efforts, get more satisfying results, and speed up the road to success.

A better use of your budget

When you don’t know which marketing strategies or types of ads are worth investing in, it is easy to waste your budget.

By contrast, when you know the interests, tastes, preferences, and other characteristics of your potential customers, you make a safer investment, because you apply the marketing strategies with the highest chance of success.

More customers and greater loyalty

Logically, winning customers, growing their number, and keeping them loyal is one of the main goals of any business. By defining your target audience, you can attract those potential customers and increase your profits steadily. What entrepreneur doesn’t want that?

What’s more, when you know everything or almost everything about your customer, it is easier to offer them what they want and, as a result, keep them coming back. Thanks to that, your customer base will grow exponentially. So let’s get to work! Do you think you know your target audience now?
