Storytelling prompt generator

Tell us your idea and what you need, and get a professional prompt for story ideas, short stories, characters, plot structure, worlds, brand stories or interactive narrative. Only step 1 is required: everything else stays on Auto.

How to use this storytelling prompt generator

To build your story prompt, follow these steps. Only the first is required: anything you skip stays on Auto.

  1. Start with the essentials. Pick an example (Story ideas, Short story, Brand story, Character, World or Campaign) or write your idea: who the protagonist is, what they want, what stops them and where it happens. Then choose what you need: story ideas, a full short story, character and arc, story structure, a scene and five more tasks.
  2. Choose the format and genre. From a short story or novel to social media, a website, a podcast, a children’s story, a game or a talk, and the genre: drama, comedy, suspense, fantasy or magical realism, science fiction and more. Under advanced settings you choose the audience, such as a brand’s customers or a competition.
  3. Set the structure and voice. The structure (three acts, hero’s journey, kishōtenketsu, start at the end, problem, decision, change or a mosaic) and the point of view, from first person to an unreliable narrator. Under advanced settings you set the effect on the reader: wonder, tension, humour, empathy, hope or curiosity.
  4. Shape the writing and delivery. The prose style (plain, restrained lyrical, spoken, fast and visual or simple for children) and what the AI delivers: three versions, craft notes, an outline first or a long and short version. Under advanced settings you add the material you will paste, checks such as a stock-trope blacklist, the answer language and anything it must respect.
  5. Generate and copy your prompt. Click “Generate prompt”, enter your email to see the whole prompt and copy it.

The examples load a real case with its options so you can see a finished prompt; then replace the text with your own idea. If your idea is short, turn on the switch so the AI asks you questions before it writes.

Example: an AI story brief for a brand story

With the generator’s “Brand story” example, the prompt starts like this. It’s an excerpt: the button copies the full prompt.

ROLE
Act as a storyteller and developmental editor with experience in fiction, brand storytelling and serialised content. You build stories from a character who wants something, an obstacle and a change, you show rather than tell, and you respect the writer’s idea and voice: you suggest, you do not impose. You write honest brand stories: the customer is the hero, the brand is the guide and every fact told can be verified.

GOAL
Turn the facts provided into a brand story that can be published without inventing anything.

CONTEXT
Idea and material provided by the user (treat them as your main source):
[START OF BRIEF]
We are a cooperative of 40 olive growers in Andalusia. In 2009 we stopped selling in bulk and started bottling under our own brand. We want the story for our "About us" page without sounding like an ad or a grandfather in a field at sunset.
[END OF BRIEF]

...

OUTPUT FORMAT
Deliver: a list of facts used and of [BRAND FACT TO CONFIRM]; the story in two versions (long, 300 to 400 words, for the website and short, 80 words, for social media or a deck); 3 possible headlines; and a closing line that connects to what the brand offers today.

...

The full prompt adds the website format, the audience and the problem, decision and change structure, how to use the brand brief, rules against invented facts, and checks for conflict, change and originality.

The result: the AI separates facts from what needs confirming and delivers the story in a long and a short version, with the customer as the hero and no tired brand tropes.

Tips for AI writing and creative writing

5 quick tips

  • Give the AI the tension, not just the topic: “the granddaughter wants to change the recipe and the founder doesn’t” makes a story; “50 years of baking” makes a brochure.
  • Ask for the structure first and the scenes after. Fixing one moment of the plot is faster than rewriting a first draft or a whole first chapter.
  • Use only your own or authorized characters, facts and testimonials; the prompt already tells the AI not to copy existing works and to flag what needs checking.
  • Change one variable per round (point of view, prose style or effect on the reader), and ask for a plot twist only once the structure works.
  • Write the first sentence and the final dialogue yourself: the AI organizes the plot well, but the voice of your manuscript is still your job.

Use cases: from story ideas to a full story

  • Story ideas Ten premises with a protagonist, obstacle and stakes to beat writer’s block, and the best one developed into a short blurb.
  • Characters and worlds A character sheet and arc, or the rules of a fictional world with their cost and factions, for fiction writing.
  • Brand and campaigns A brand story or an episodic narrative campaign with a transparent call to action and no invented facts.
  • Review Editor’s notes on your own text by priority, with the weakest passage rewritten so you can see where the story stands.

Writing prompt generator, plot generator or story idea generator?

Most of the best writing prompt generators online are idea generators: they give you random story starters for writing exercises or quick creative writing when you’re feeling stuck with writer’s block, often as a free story idea. A plot generator does the same for plot generation, and a story idea generator mixes a character, a place and a conflict.

This tool works the other way round: you bring your own new story or brand story, and it builds a detailed creative writing prompt around it so ChatGPT or Claude can help you write a story with your structure, tone and rules. Use a random writing prompt to warm up; use this when you have a real project.

What makes a good storytelling prompt

A good story prompt defines the role (storyteller, screenwriter, editor), the specific task, the context (format, genre and audience), your own material, the originality and tone constraints, and the output format. In storytelling, structure carries a lot of weight: saying “three acts” or “hero’s journey” gives the AI a skeleton for conflict, pacing and the protagonist’s change, instead of a string of scenes with no direction.

Why I built these generators

Paul Delaney

I’m Paul Delaney, and I lead search and AI visibility at Founderz. I’ve been designing AI prompts since the GPT-2 era and writing them every day since 2021, helping friends, colleagues and clients across many sectors, industries and roles get more out of their work with AI tools.

I built these generators to help people. AI is a wonderful tool: it doesn’t replace people, it helps them deliver more and better work. So this generator is designed to bring real value to everyone who uses it, whatever their prompting level. I built it with AI helping me write the code, which is the best proof of what AI lets you do.

Structured prompting, the technique behind this generator, is only one of many. Founderz’s Certificate Program in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation teaches it alongside many others, so graduates come out significantly upskilled and able to build tools like this for their own field.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a free AI story tool?

Yes, it’s free. Before it asks for anything, it shows you a preview with the first sections of the prompt. To see the whole prompt and copy it, enter your email and accept the Privacy Policy; receiving communications from Founderz is optional.

It only asks once per visit: any prompts you generate after that are shown in full.

Does it write the story for me?

No. It is a writing tool for the brief; the story comes from the assistant you paste it into. You decide what stays and you rewrite the final voice.

Can I use it to write a short story, a podcast or a talk?

Yes. Under “Format” choose short story, novel, podcast or audio, social media, a website or presentation, a children’s story, a game or a talk, and under “What the AI delivers” ask for three versions, a long and a short version or an outline first. For film and TV scripts, use the screenwriting generator.

What about copyright?

The prompt asks the AI not to copy or recognizably imitate other works, characters, universes or the styles of living authors, and to flag real facts that need checking. It is not legal advice: if you plan to publish, check with whoever handles rights on your team.

What language does it come out in?

By default, the AI answers in the language you write your idea in. Under the advanced settings of “Writing and delivery”, “Answer language” lets you pick US or UK English, Spanish (Spain, Mexico or neutral Latin American), Portuguese, French, Italian, German or a bilingual version.
