Financial analysis prompt generator

Tell us about the company, the decision and the data you have, and get a professional prompt for variances, cash, forecasts, investments and reporting. Only step 1 is required: everything else stays on Auto.

How finance teams use the financial analysis prompt generator, step by step

To build your prompt, follow these steps. Only the first one is required: anything you skip stays on Auto.

  1. Start with the essentials. Pick an example (margin variance, 13-week cash forecast, business case, monthly reporting, unusual payments or unit economics) or describe the company, the decision and the data you have. Then choose the analysis you need, or leave Auto to work it out from your text.
  2. Describe your company and data. The business model (services, manufacturing, retail, SaaS, startup, group, real estate, bank or nonprofit), the data you will attach and the period you compare. Under advanced settings you set the accounting framework (US GAAP, IFRS, Spanish GAAP or management accounts), data quality, the scale of amounts and materiality.
  3. Choose the audience and format. Who it is for (leadership team, CFO, board, investors, bank, non-finance managers or audit) and the format: executive summary, KPI tables, report, slides or email. Under advanced settings you choose where you will work with the data (Excel, Copilot in Excel, Google Sheets or Power BI) and the level of detail.
  4. Set the method and checks. The analysis method (horizontal and vertical, ratios, driver-based, scenarios, DCF or reconciliation) and the AI’s role: recommend, analyze only or prepare a decision. Under advanced settings you add extra checks, the response language and any limit the AI must respect.
  5. Generate and copy your prompt. Click “Generate prompt”, enter your email to see the whole prompt and copy it.

Eleven financial analyses. The “What analysis do you need?” selector offers P&L variances and results, monthly reporting, a 13-week cash forecast, forecast and scenarios, annual budget, investment business case, balance sheet, liquidity and debt, margins and unit economics, cost optimization, financial due diligence, and anomalies and controls.

Each analysis comes with its own output format, with specific tables and columns, and three follow-up requests to paste into the same conversation afterwards.

Example: explaining a gross margin drop to the leadership team

With the generator’s “Margin variance” example, the prompt starts like this. It’s an excerpt: the button copies the full prompt.

ROLE
Act as a senior financial analyst (financial planning and analysis, management control and treasury) with experience in month-end close, management reporting and investment appraisal. You work from evidence: every figure comes from the material provided or from a calculation you show, and you never fill gaps with invented data. You are an expert in variance analysis and profit bridges: price, volume, mix, currency and cost effects.

GOAL
Explain what happened in the income statement against budget and the prior period, and why, so leadership can decide what to fix.

CONTEXT
Context provided by the user (treat it as your main source):
[START OF BRIEF]
B2B SaaS company with 85 employees. In September gross margin was 71 % against a budget of 75 % and 74 % in the same month last year. Revenue is on budget, but hosting and support costs went up after we moved to a new cloud provider in August. I have the monthly income statement and the budget in Excel. I present it to the leadership team on Thursday.
[END OF BRIEF]

...

OUTPUT FORMAT
Deliver: 1) a three-line headline with the result, the main variance and its cause; 2) a variance table with columns Line, Actual, Budget, Var. abs., Var. %, Last year, F/U, Cause (fact or [hypothesis]); 3) a bridge from budgeted to actual profit as a table (Item, Amount, Running total), ready for a waterfall chart; 4) actions with an owner and a date, or [to be confirmed].

...

The full prompt adds the constraints (no invented figures, formulas and units shown, symptoms kept apart from causes), the steps that split price, volume and mix effects, a one-page format for the leadership team and a final self-check.

The result: because revenue is on budget, the assistant looks for the cause in cost of sales (hosting and support after the provider change) and marks as [hypothesis] anything the spreadsheet does not prove.

Tips: benchmark, validate and streamline your workflow

6 quick tips

  • Declare your data quality. If the numbers are preliminary or not closed, say so in “Data quality” and the AI will validate before it concludes.
  • Set materiality, for example variances over 5% or 10%, so the analysis focuses on what changes the decision.
  • Choose the accounting framework you report under. An analysis under US GAAP doesn’t read the same as one under IFRS.
  • If you work in Excel, name the sheets, tables and periods, as Microsoft recommends in its Copilot in Excel tips.
  • Turn on “Control row” and “Warning signs” under extra checks when the output goes to a committee, so anyone can check the math. Formulas and units are always included.
  • Always review the figures with your team. The tool doesn’t replace professional judgment or financial, tax, legal, credit or investment advice.

Use cases: cash flow, valuation and financial model building

  • Close and reporting Results, P&L and variance analysis, and monthly reporting for management.
  • Cash Cash flow, cash position and working capital with a 13-week view.
  • Planning Annual budget, rolling forecast and scenarios with sensitivity and break-even.
  • Investment A CAPEX business case with a conditional go/no-go, and DCF, NPV and IRR with explicit assumptions.
  • Risk and control A table of anomalies and control weaknesses, the test that would confirm each finding and what to escalate to audit.
  • Business performance Unit economics, CAC, LTV and churn, margins by line and cost optimization.

What makes good prompts for financial analysts

A good finance prompt gives the model what you’d give a new financial analyst on your team: a role, a specific task, the company context and the decision, the material it can use (the P&L, balance sheet, ERP extract or Excel file), the constraints and the delivery format. In finance, the constraints are half the job: no invented figures, every assumption labeled, formulas and units shown, and symptoms kept apart from root causes. Without them, AI gives answers that sound right but that nobody can audit.

10 ChatGPT prompts for financial analysis you can copy

If you’d rather start in ChatGPT directly, these ChatGPT prompts follow the same logic. Use these prompts with your own anonymized data, start with one prompt and add the next once the first answer checks out:

  1. “Using the attached financial statements, run a trend analysis of revenue, gross margin and operating costs over the last three years and highlight the key financial changes.”
  2. “Calculate the key metrics for liquidity and leverage, explain each financial ratio in one line and benchmark them against the prior year.”
  3. “Build a 13-week cash flow forecast from this spreadsheet of cash inflows and outflows. Show net cash per week and flag the current cash low point.”
  4. “Do a cash flow analysis of our DSO and payables, and suggest ways to improve cash flow, such as early payment discounts or ways to optimize timing of supplier payments.”
  5. “Create cash flow projections for three different scenarios and a sensitivity analysis on price and volume.”
  6. “Estimate our burn rate and runway, and summarise the risk management actions that matter most.”
  7. “Review this discounted cash flow model: list every assumption, check the payback period and tell me what would change the valuation most.”
  8. “Analyze unit economics: contribution margin per customer, CAC and LTV calculations, and which marketing spend is the highest-value.”
  9. “Turn this raw data from the ERP into a monthly report with historical financial context and financial trends, plus strategies to reduce costs.”
  10. “Check revenue recognition and concentration risks in our top 20 customers, and list what needs an accountant’s review.”

These AI prompts for finance are designed to support financial decision-making, not replace it. They help finance teams make informed decisions, allocate time to strategic planning and improve overall financial operations, while the generator adds the controls that keep the financial information reliable. For personal finances or your own financial goals, the same structure helps you plan, but it isn’t financial advice.

Why I built these generators

Paul Delaney

I’m Paul Delaney, and I lead search and AI visibility at Founderz. I’ve been designing AI prompts since the GPT-2 era and writing them every day since 2021, helping friends, colleagues and clients across many sectors, industries and roles get more out of their work with AI tools.

I built these generators to help people. AI is a wonderful tool: it doesn’t replace people, it helps them deliver more and better work. So this generator is designed to bring real value to everyone who uses it, whatever their prompting level. I built it with AI helping me write the code, which is the best proof of what AI lets you do.

Structured prompting, the technique behind this generator, is only one of many. Founderz’s Certificate Program in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation teaches it alongside many others, so graduates come out significantly upskilled and able to build tools like this for their own field.

Frequently asked questions

Is the financial analysis prompt generator free?

Yes, it’s free. Before it asks for anything, it shows you a preview with the first sections of the prompt. To see the whole prompt and copy it, enter your email and accept the Privacy Policy; receiving communications from Founderz is optional.

It only asks once per visit: any prompts you generate after that are shown in full.

Can I paste real financial data?

Use anonymized or aggregate data. Don’t include names, bank accounts, tax IDs, customers or identifiable confidential information, and check your company’s policy before you upload files to an AI tool. With “Anonymize” under extra checks, the output replaces customer, supplier and bank names with placeholders.

Which AI tools does it work with?

Any text assistant: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or the one your company has approved. If you work with the data in a spreadsheet, choose Excel, Copilot in Excel, Google Sheets or Power BI in “Where will you work with the data?” and the prompt adds the formulas, the Copilot requests or the DAX measures that reproduce each calculation.

Can AI build financial projections or a budget?

It can help you build one. Choose “Forecast and scenarios” or “Annual budget”, set the horizon in “Period and comparison” and attach your starting data: the prompt asks for an assumptions table with the source of each one, three scenarios and the sensitivity to the two drivers that move the result most.

Does it replace a financial advisor or an auditor?

No. Every prompt tells the assistant not to give personalized investment, credit, tax or legal advice, and that its output is analysis to support a decision, to be reviewed by a qualified professional.
