AI interior design prompt generator

Describe the space and choose room, style, materials, light and view. It works for new renders and for redesigning a photo of a real room. Only step 1 is required.

How to use the interior design prompt generator in five steps

To build your prompt, follow these steps. Only the first one is required: anything you skip stays on Auto.

  1. Start with the essentials. Pick an example (Small living room, more light; Redesign my kitchen; Restaurant with character; Hotel room; Home office moodboard or A store that sells) or describe the space in one line. Choose the image you need, from a design render or a redesign of your photo to a moodboard, a furnished floor plan or an axonometric, and the tool: ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Stable Diffusion, Flux, Microsoft Copilot or Photoshop. If you redesign your photo, choose what to change: the whole style, furnish an empty room, floors and walls, furniture and textiles, or tidy and declutter.
  2. Choose the space and the style. The room, from a living room or kitchen to a restaurant, hotel, store or office, and the style: warm minimalism, Japandi, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, wabi-sabi, mid-century and six more. In the advanced settings you set the color palette and what must appear or stay.
  3. Pick materials and light. The main materials, such as light wood and linen, dark oak and brass or terrazzo, and the light, from bright morning to layered night. In the advanced settings you add the design goal (more space, hidden storage, kids and pets, accessible) and the kind of furniture.
  4. Set the view and the use. The view (eye level, from the entrance, toward the window, facing one wall or from a corner) and where you will use the image, from a client presentation to a property listing. In the advanced settings you choose the aspect ratio, what to avoid and the finish.
  5. Generate and copy your prompt. Click “Generate prompt”, enter your email to see the whole prompt, copy it and paste it into your image tool.

The prompt goes straight into your image tool, with no chat assistant in between. The room list covers thirteen options, from living rooms and kitchens to restaurants, hotels and stores. If you’re unsure about an advanced field, leave it on Auto.

Example: an AI interior design prompt for a small living room

With the generator’s “Small living room, more light” example, this is the full prompt:

Create a photorealistic interior design render: living room of 16 m² with a single east-facing window and oak floors.

Design render: a finished room that feels naturally lived in, like an interiors magazine photo, with no catalog look. Living room: a conversation area with the sofa facing a focal point, a rug that groups the pieces and a clear walkway of at least 90 cm. Warm minimalist style: a few well-proportioned pieces, hidden storage, light woods and natural textiles. Materials: light oak floors and joinery, washed linen and limestone surfaces. Light: bright, soft morning, sun filtered through linen curtains and long shadows on the floor. Goal: make it feel larger, with slim-legged furniture, mirrors, light colors and high-level storage. View: perfectly straight verticals and the room readable at a glance; if there is no starting photo, camera at eye level. Sharp finish, believable materials and no artifacts. Format: 3:2 aspect ratio.

Avoid: converging verticals or warped perspective, floating or out-of-scale furniture, made-up text or logos and watermarks.

Every sentence comes from one choice in the generator: the image type, room, style, materials, light, design goal and view, plus the aspect ratio and a list of what to avoid.

The result: the image tool gets a buildable room with real clearances, materials and light instead of a vague mood, so the render can be shown to a client.

Tips on how to use AI for interior design in ChatGPT and image tools

6 quick tips

  • Before generating interior images, give dimensions and what stays. Vague prompts return a beautiful room that can’t be built; a specific prompt with measurements doesn’t.
  • State the orientation and real light: a north-facing living room needs a different palette and lighting plan than a south-facing one.
  • If you start from a room photo, upload it with the prompt in a tool that accepts images and ask it to keep windows, doors and flooring.
  • Ask for comparable options (“Three style options” under “What image do you need?”) and decide between them, rather than chasing one perfect interior render.
  • ChatGPT interior design prompts work best one room at a time; describe the whole home only for an overall concept.
  • Always confirm measurements, building systems, code compliance and budget with qualified professionals: the image is for developing and sharing ideas.

Use cases: AI room design for living rooms, kitchens and home design projects

  • Small spaces and a modern living room Layouts and hidden storage for apartments and studios.
  • Kitchen design and bathrooms Practical, easy-to-clean materials and a layout that works.
  • Updates without major construction New palette, furniture and lighting while reusing existing pieces.
  • Retail and hospitality Stores, restaurants and hotels with character and product visibility.
  • Real estate AI virtual staging ideas to show an empty room with AI, always labeled as a visualization.
  • Client proposals Overhead views, axonometrics and material details for a professional interior design project.

What makes AI prompts for interior design work

For an interior designer, a good prompt states the image type, the room and who uses it, the style and palette, the materials and light, what must stay, the view and what to avoid. Dimensions and fixed elements improve the result most, whichever design AI or AI room tool you use.

Why I built these generators

Paul Delaney

I’m Paul Delaney, and I lead search and AI visibility at Founderz. I’ve been designing AI prompts since the GPT-2 era and writing them every day since 2021, helping friends, colleagues and clients across many sectors, industries and roles get more out of their work with AI tools.

I built these generators to help people. AI is a wonderful tool: it doesn’t replace people, it helps them deliver more and better work. So this generator is designed to bring real value to everyone who uses it, whatever their prompting level. I built it with AI helping me write the code, which is the best proof of what AI lets you do.

Structured prompting, the technique behind this generator, is only one of many. Founderz’s Certificate Program in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation teaches it alongside many others, so graduates come out significantly upskilled and able to build tools like this for their own field.

Frequently asked questions

Is this interior design AI free?

Yes, it’s free. Before it asks for anything, it shows you a preview with the first sections of the prompt. To see the whole prompt and copy it, enter your email and accept the Privacy Policy; receiving communications from Founderz is optional.

It only asks once per visit: any prompts you generate after that are shown in full.

Is it an AI interior design generator that makes the interior render?

No. It writes the prompt, and you create the image in the tool you pick under “Which tool?”: ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Stable Diffusion, Flux, Microsoft Copilot or Photoshop. You can also use it as a guide in SketchUp, Enscape, Planner 5D or Homestyler.

Can I use a photo of my room?

Yes. Choose “Redesign my photo” in “What image do you need?” and then what you want to change. The prompt tells the AI to keep walls, windows, doors, ceiling, camera position and natural light, and reminds you to attach the photo in the same message, taken straight on and in good light.

Which is the best AI interior design tool to use?

There’s no single best AI: ChatGPT and Gemini are good at editing a photo of your room step by step, and Midjourney or Firefly at new renders. Pick the one you’ll use under “Which tool?” so the prompt adapts to it.

Which language is the prompt in?

In English, the language image tools follow best, so you can paste it as it is into any tool on the list.
